Last Updated: November 11, 2024

Great news for hikers and nature enthusiasts! Access to the top of Pico Ruivo has reopened, allowing visitors once again to experience the breathtaking views from Madeira’s highest peak.

Restoration Work on PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo Completed

The Institute for Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) announced the completion of restoration work on the PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo trail between the Pico Ruivo Shelter House and the summit, making this popular section fully accessible and safe.

The Route from Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo

To reach the peak, hikers must take the PR 1.2 route from Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo. This trail provides a relatively accessible path to the summit, offering stunning landscapes and panoramic views along the way. The Achada do Teixeira route is a favorite for both seasoned hikers and beginners, offering a manageable ascent to Pico Ruivo. With the recent reopening of this section, hikers can once again enjoy a safe and memorable journey to Madeira’s highest point.

Temporary Closure of PR 1 Trail Segment to Pico do Areeiro

While access to Pico Ruivo has reopened from Achada do Teixeira, the PR 1 trail segment connecting the Pico do Areeiro, Pico Ruivo Shelter House, and Pico Ruivo Peak remains temporarily closed after 1.2 km (one way) due to safety concerns. Known for its challenging terrain and exposure to the elements, this section of the trail requires deeper and more specialized interventions to ensure stability and safety. The IFCN is conducting regular assessments of this area, closely monitoring escarpment zones to identify necessary interventions for a safe reopening.

Supporting Trail Maintenance: €3 Fee for Conservation

Additionally, a €3 maintenance fee is now in place for visitors on Madeira’s trails, including those heading to Pico Ruivo. This fee contributes directly to the upkeep of these natural routes, ensuring that iconic trails like Pico Ruivo remain accessible and in top condition for all. By supporting trail maintenance, visitors help preserve Madeira’s unique natural beauty and adventure opportunities for future generations.
