As of January 14, 2025, the Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) has introduced a new policy requiring non-resident tourists to bear the costs of helicopter rescues under certain conditions. Madeira implements helicopter rescue fees for tourists to encourage responsible tourism and ensure the sustainability of emergency resources in the region.
When Will Tourists Be Charged?
Specifically, the policy applies to tourists in the following scenarios:
- Hiking Unofficial or Closed Trails: Visitors requiring rescue after venturing into non-designated or closed hiking areas will be liable for the associated costs.
- Exemption for Residents: Madeira residents are exempt from these fees, provided they can verify their residency through the “Resident Card” available on the Simplifica Platform.
How Much Will It Cost?
The cost structure for helicopter rescues is as follows:
- Activation of Helicopter Services: €753.25.
- Rescue Specialists: €105 per rescuer; typically, two rescuers are involved, totaling €210.
- Flight Time: €7.50 per minute.
For example, a rescue requiring 30 minutes of flight time would cost approximately €1,188.25.
Prices quoted are excluding VAT.
Why Was This Policy Introduced?
The initiative addresses the increasing demand for rescues involving tourists who venture into dangerous or unauthorized areas, often disregarding local safety guidelines. By holding individuals financially accountable, the SRPC aims to:
- Deter risky behavior and encourage adherence to official regulations.
- Promote safer hiking practices among tourists.
- Reduce the financial burden on local resources caused by preventable rescue operations.
What Does This Mean for Visitors?
This new policy underscores the importance of planning activities carefully and respecting Madeira’s official guidelines for hiking and adventure tourism. Visitors should:
- Stick to Official Trails: Always choose designated hiking paths and check for updates on closures or restrictions.
- Prepare yourself: Bring the right gear and know the difficulty level of the trails.
- Follow Local Rules: Abide by regulations to ensure your safety and avoid unexpected costs.
A Step Toward Sustainable Tourism
Madeira implements helicopter rescue fees for tourists as part of its efforts to balance the island’s growing popularity as an adventure destination with the need to protect its natural resources and maintain its emergency infrastructure. We encourage tourists to enjoy the island’s beauty responsibly, ensuring a safe and memorable experience for everyone.
