New Hiking Fees in Madeira: What Visitors Need to Know

Last Updated: October 25, 2024

In a bid to protect Madeira’s renowned natural trails, a new hiking fee structure has been introduced for non-resident hikers on the island’s most popular paths. This initiative is part of a larger conservation effort, not only aimed at preserving Madeira’s unique landscapes for future generations but also enhancing the experience for all visitors. Here’s what you need to know about these hiking fees in Madeira and the additional measures being implemented to ensure the island’s sustainability.

The new hiking fees for non-residents on seven trails in Madeira will start on October 28, 2024.

After that, on January 1, 2025, all PR (recommended routes) trails in Madeira will require a fee for access.

Reasons for the New Hiking Fees

With its breathtaking trails and diverse ecosystems, Madeira has become a top destination for nature lovers worldwide. However, the increasing number of visitors has placed added pressure on Madeira’s fragile environments. By introducing a 3€ access fee for select trails, Madeira aims to:

  • Support Conservation: Fees will directly fund conservation projects, protecting Madeira’s unique flora and fauna.
  • Preserve Trail Quality: With these funds, the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) will perform regular maintenance to keep trails safe and enjoyable.
  • Promote Sustainable Tourism: Encouraging visitors to contribute to environmental upkeep aligns with Madeira’s commitment to sustainable tourism practices.

These changes mean that visitors are now active participants in safeguarding the island’s natural beauty, ensuring that future hikers can enjoy the trails in their pristine state.

Trails Now Requiring a Fee

Starting on October 28, 2024, seven of Madeira’s iconic trails now have a 3€ fee for non-residents aged 12 and over. Each of these trails offers unique insights into Madeira’s diverse landscapes, from high mountain views to serene coastal paths. Specifically, the new fee structure applies to the following trails:

  • Vereda do Areeiro (PR1): Connects Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest peak.
  • Vereda do Pico Ruivo (PR1.2): A shorter route from Achada do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo.
  • Levada do Risco (PR6.1): A scenic walk leading to the Risco waterfall.
  • Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço (PR8): A dramatic coastal trail at the island’s eastern edge.
  • Levada do Caldeirão Verde (PR9): Winds through lush Laurisilva forest to the Caldeirão Verde waterfall.
  • Vereda dos Balcões (PR11): A short trail ending at a stunning valley viewpoint.
  • Levada do Rei (PR18): Traverses Madeira’s ancient Laurisilva forest.

How to Prepare for Your Hike

For visitors planning to explore these iconic trails, there are a few steps to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience:

  • Follow Environmental Guidelines: Stick to designated trails, avoid disturbing local flora, and always carry out any litter.

Moreover, these actions not only enhance the experience for you but also contribute to a collective effort to preserve Madeira’s natural beauty.

Additional Conservation and Visitor Measures

Beyond hiking and parking, other conservation-focused measures include:

  1. Diving Fees: A €5 fee now applies to diving in protected areas like Garajau and Desertas to support marine conservation.
  2. Permits for Events and Filming: Events or commercial filming in IFCN-managed areas now require permits, ensuring alignment with conservation goals.
  3. Entry Fees for Facilities: Sites such as Jardim Botânico (€10 for adults) have adjusted entry fees, with proceeds going toward facility upkeep.

A Collective Commitment to Nature

Ultimately, while the new hiking fees represent a small contribution, they symbolize a shared commitment to preserving Madeira’s unique landscapes. From maintaining safe trails and supporting biodiversity to enhancing visitor amenities, these measures aim to ensure that everyone – locals and visitors alike – can enjoy the island responsibly.

Every visitor has a role to play. By contributing to Madeira’s sustainable tourism efforts, you’re helping to protect this paradise for future generations.
