New Measures for Car Access Control

To address the high volume of visitors, authorities will soon install electronic mechanisms to control vehicle entry. Specifically, barriers and gates will restrict access based on the availability of parking spaces. Additionally, an information panel near Poiso (see map below) will inform drivers about parking availability. Consequently, this system aims to reduce congestion and improve the overall parking experience.

Parking Regulations and Costs

Parking at Pico do Areeiro will soon cost four euros per hour, with a 15-minute fraction costing one euro. Fortunately, the first 15 minutes will be free for those dropping off passengers. Furthermore, additional parking areas, including one near “Casa de Abrigo das Sorveiras”, will offer a lower rate of two euros per hour. These regulations will apply to both tourists and residents.

Accessibility for Special Needs

In terms of accessibility, vehicles carrying people with reduced mobility and tourist vans will have reserved parking near Casa das Sorveiras. Meanwhile, additional parking areas further down will accommodate other visitors. Additionally, tour buses will have designated parking near the Radar.

Implementation and Timeline

These mechanisms regulations are set to take effect on January 1, 2025. Ultimately, this Pico do Areeiro Access Control initiatives reflects the government’s proactive approach to managing tourism, ensuring a balance between accessibility and environmental conservation.
